Part I: Introduction to Motion Control

The motion control crew

In the world of visual effects, the crews both reminds and differ from the usual first unit crew. In the visual effect world many different job titles and descriptions exist, that vary from time to time, company to company and from production to production. The list below are a generic motion control crew.

Visual Effect Supervisor

Depending on the type of shot, there may or may not be a Visual Effect Supervisor. If there are one, he or she is the chief of the visual effect department. And often acting as the Director of Photography and Director on the set for the visual effect shots.

Motion Control Coordinator

The Visual Effect or Motion Control Coordinator is in charge. And are the person that all communication and information about the motion control goes through. The coordinators main duty are administrative, to make sure the motion control team do what it supposed to do and keep the schedule.

Assistant Cameraman

The motion control assistant cameraman are responsible for the camera, prepping it, loading magazines, doing slates and help the operator to set the focus.

Motion Control Operator

The motion control operator are the “button pusher” responsible for programming the camera moves.

Motion Control Grip

Also called “rigger”, are responsible for setting up the motion control rig and leveling the track.
