Blog Magellan: Archive Navigation

I guess this, my English site, will become more and more about web design and development in general with an occasional humor piece split in for good measure, while I spend more time covering philosophy, history, writing and film making in swedish.

One of my personal goals is to become a better writer overall. So on with that webby thingy then…

As I mentioned before in the tagcloud post one thing I’ve been fiddling with is navigation on the site. This time it is the archive navigation.

Archive Navigation 1

As you can see, I created a simple folding navigation.

Archive Navigation 2

That will get you to the level of the archive that you choose, click on a month and get the monthly archive and so on.

Archive Navigation 3

It’s quite simple and nothing fancy, try it out on this site (go to the front page).

Compatibility

This plugin has not yet been tested with WordPress 2.1 for compatibility. However, it has been audited following the notes from the WordPress developers and it should be compatible.

Download

Now the big drumroll: I have created a sidebar Archive Navigation widget that can be downloaded as archivenav_v11.zip.

    Hi,
this plugin looks really cool, and I’d like to use ita, but I haven’t find anywhere what I should write in my code (instead of “”) after I actived the plugin.

Please forgive me for my bad English and my worst “wordpress culture”! =P
    Thanks.

It’s a sidebar widget. So you have to go into the Presentation > Sidbar Widgets (in the WP admin interface) and drop it onto the sidebar.

Call me thick! I don’t have Presentation > Sidbar Widgets

Can you tell me in thick terms just how I’m supposed to activate this?

Sidebar widgets was released in Mars 2006 by Automattic. I actually believed that it was shipped with WordPress by default nowadays, just like Akismet (also by Automattic), so there are some more steps if you don’t already have it installed.

To use the widget you need:

    1. WordPress 2.0 (or higher)
    2. WordPress Widgets Plugin
    3. A widgetized theme.

You can read more about sidebar widgets and the widgetizment of themes on the Automattic’s WordPress Widget page.

Just a quick note: After you uploaded a widget to the webserver, don’t forget to go to the Plugin page and activate it, just like any normal plugin. I tell you, I’ve done the mistake to not activate so many times, ending up swearing over widgets that won’t turn up on the Sidebar Widget page for some mysterious reason…

    Hope this will do it!

Hey, I just installed this widget on my site and i’m having some difficulty. I backdated a bunch of posts to 2006, so I was thinking that might be the issue? When I click on 2006, it actually opens up 2007 dropdown menu. Any ideas???
