Candy Barr Passed Away At Age 70

Candy BarrIt was a sad day for me when the news about Juanita Phillips, a.k.a. Candy Barr, death reached me. To me she was a legend that lived an extraordinary life reflecting the state of the Lone Stars mind, something that only an author like James Ellroy would be able to put into words.

She had her hair done at my beauty salon, because I would let her come in after hours to avoid people. She was kind and wanted to be allowed to live a quiet life, which is almost impossible in any small town. She autographed a book to me…..the one of poems that she wrote in prison. I know that many criticized her…..but given her start in life….I wonder how many of us would have done much differently. I found her to be a quiet and gentle woman and was proud to call her friend.

I knew Juanita (Candy Barr) during the year 1967 in Houston, Edna and Las Vegas. I found her to be a mild mannered person…although she was jaded from the life she led. Candy was very down-to-earth, not hungup on her beauty. She had the most beautiful bosum I have ever seen on any woman. (Hers was natural) She did not wear a lot of makup and could rival any big-time movie star of today in looks and figure.
I would like to know how she led her life once she retired. I never forgot our times together.

I was born a few months before Candy. As a teenager I was capitivated by her pictures. She was the dream girl of all my buddies. She had the sweetest face and cutest smile. She was my boyhood pinup. I wish her life had been eaiser. I am sorry for her passing. She remains that cute little cowgirl I remember form my teenage years. A part of me is now also gone. I never knew her, but I miss her.

The linked Dallas News article says:

Ms. Barr was married four times and had at least one child, a daughter.

Aunt ‘Nita has a surviving daughter and 2 grandchildren. As far as nieces and nephews we are many multiplying like rabbits! Her life was quite at home and she stayed out of the limelight. The Feds never stopped looking at her and would return every few years to ask more questions. People would hound others trying to find her, I once met a man that was working at a carnival and jumped over to scare the poop out of me when he said her name and I corrected him saying ‘no’ you don’t call Aunt ‘Nita that, she is Juanita, not Candy.

Juanita was my dads cousin. I grew up hearing things now and then, from my parents. Juanita was the one who taught my dad how to dance. The last time I saw her was at her mothers funeral. I would like to get to know about my fathers side of the family if anyone can help.
