Iraq Crisis

So has the war on Iraq begun. I have planed to sum up my opinion on the crisis for some time now but never got to it. I discussed this yeasterday with one of my best friends over phone and estimated what would hapen tonight and why. So i decided to write down what we had discussed as a first-iteration take on this issue.

Personally I’m not against war per se. But I feel war shall be fought according to international law. Especially wars fought by those who claim to be the good guys.

I dislike Saddam and I believe that a big portion of the world do the same. Even those who oppose the war. This is probably something that is lost on many Americans. People in general is not opposed to removing Saddam from power or finding his weapons of mass destruction, they are opposed to the way it’s done.

According to international law a country has the right to defend itself against an attacker. The Bush administrations argument is that Iraq is a threat against U.S and their actions is preemptive. And many legal experts agree on that it is not a valid argument under current international law. Since Iraq do not threat or has attacked U.S. And thus the military actions taken by U.S and U.K is actaully illegal and Iraq has international law on its side.

Actual some good outcome of the war, in my opinion, may not just be the removal of Sadam from power but the fall of the Bush administration as well.

Why is it started now? One simple reason is that forces at the gulf has been deployed overseas for some time now and if the war did not start they had to start rotate personnel.

It also is a war that was inevitable. Everyone had locked their positions, even that there had started a process of disarmament that looked sucessfull. The fault is not just the U.S but also French.

In a sense it is a releafe that is has begun. I think alot of people just like me had the feeling “oh just get done with it - Bush wants war and gonna get war - no matter what”.

I’m all okay with protests agains this war. But something that still annoys me with most of those protests is the argument agains U.S. If you going to protest agains the war, check your facts, make valid arguments. Otherwise they will be just as bad as the Bush administrations arguments to justify this war.

One argument is that the war is about oil. I believe it is not since U.S has never been less dependent on oil from the gulf. However French who is against military actions has very large interest already in Iraqi oil fields and one reason for their reluctancy is protection of assets.
